Updated August 2026 · 42 lounges and tobacconists · Compiled by Peter Stefanic, Certified Cigar Sommelier (IACS)
Nashville has more genuine cigar bars than most cities twice its size, and the reason is a quirk of Tennessee law: venues that admit only over-21s are exempt from the state smoking ban. That single clause turned the Gulch and downtown into a run of proper cigar bars with full liquor licences, live music and kitchens — the sort of room that cannot legally open in Chicago or New York.
The rest of the metro follows a different pattern. Franklin, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville and Clarksville all have shop-led lounges, and several of them are better stocked and considerably cheaper than anything downtown.
Every venue here is a cigar business first — a lounge, a cigar bar or a tobacconist with a real humidor. General smoke and vape shops are left out.

FAQ
Yes, in more venues than most US cities. Tennessee’s Non-Smoker Protection Act exempts premises that admit only people aged 21 and over, along with tobacco retailers. That is why Nashville has a run of full cigar bars downtown with liquor licences and live music, rather than only shops with seating behind the humidor. A venue that admits under-21s cannot allow smoking.
Less often than in most cities, because so many of them make their money at the bar. Where you bring your own cigar, expect either a modest fee or a request that you order a drink. Shop-led lounges outside the city generally ask only that you buy something from the humidor. Ask when you arrive.
At a downtown cigar bar with table service, tip as you would at any Nashville bar: fifteen to twenty per cent. Note that at least one lounge adds a service charge automatically, so check the bill before adding more. At a shop counter, a few dollars is right if someone has guided you through the humidor.
A few, mostly in the outer suburbs, and most of them admit visitors for a day fee rather than turning you away. If a venue describes itself as a private lounge, call ahead — the fee is usually small and the welcome is generally warm.
Yes, and here it matters more than elsewhere. Because the smoking exemption depends on excluding under-21s, venues card strictly at the door. Bring identification.
Downtown and the Gulch have the bars — five within a short drive of each other, all with full liquor licences. East Nashville and Green Hills have a handful of shop lounges. Beyond that the metro spreads wide: Franklin, Brentwood, Spring Hill and Columbia to the south, Murfreesboro and La Vergne to the south-east, Mt. Juliet and Hendersonville to the north, and Clarksville an hour north-west toward Fort Campbell.
Before you go: opening hours, prices and policies change, and businesses close without notice. Check the venue’s own website or call ahead before travelling. Listings here are compiled from public business records and are provided for guidance only.
