Have you ever thought about that the same meal, drink or the same cigar can taste completely different depending on whether you enjoy it in the morning or late at night? You’re not imagining it. Our taste buds (and overall palate) actually behave differently at different times of day. This knowledge can guide you to witch cigar you should choose depending on the time of the day.
Morning Sensitive and clean
When you first wake up, your taste buds are often more sensitive thanks to your body’s internal clock witch affects saliva production, hormones, alertness and digestive enzymes. In the morning, saliva is usually lower, which makes sweet and salty flavors pop more than usual. Bitter flavors are more intense in the morning, so coffee or grapefruit might hit hard on your palette. The same principle applies to cigars: stronger, more bitter tobaccos may feel harsher early in the day.
Sweet cravings: Morning is often when your body wants a quick energy boost, so lighter, slightly sweet cigars—like Connecticut wrappers or any mild blends, are better for the morning smoke.
If you smoke a cigar that is too strong, a full-bodied cigar in the morning before your body has had time to wake up, you are more likely to feel slightly nauseous.
Tip for morning cigar choice: mild, smooth, or slightly sweet cigars. Avoid heavy or full-bodied cigars, they can overwhelm your sensitive morning palate.
Afternoon and evening
By the evening you have most likely eaten a few meals and your digestive system is in up and running, your palate has mellowed, your saliva production is up, and your body is more accepting of stronger flavors.
Lower sensitivity to bitterness: Bitterness and spiciness feel more balanced. Dark chocolate, espresso and leather in full-bodied cigars are more enjoyable at night.
Rich flavors shine: Your evening taste buds can better appreciate flavors. A medium- to full-bodied cigar with earthy, peppery, or chocolatey notes often tastes richer after dinner. As your energy dips in the afternoon or evening, your palate craves more satisfying, indulgent flavors. This is why a bold, complex cigar can feel deeply rewarding in the afternoon and evening.
Tip for evening cigar choice: Go for medium or full-bodied cigars, especially those with layered flavors like pepper, coffee, cocoa, or leather. Pairing with dessert or after-dinner drinks can elevate the experience.
Morning: Mild, smooth, or slightly sweet cigars. Great with coffee or light breakfast.
A rule of thumb
Afternoon: Medium-bodied cigars. Balanced flavors work well with lunch or a short break.
Evening: Full-bodied, complex cigars. Ideal for after dinner or alongside rich foods and drinks.
