Construction
The cigar was firm i consistency but a little unevenly rolled near the third section. The uneven part felt firm but a bit compressed on one side. Something I hoped wouldn’t affect the glow of the cigar. Like a blanket there was a slight oily feeling wrapping around the cigar.
Band impression
The fact that the band was minimalist and only had the name Papas Fritas on the foot gave it a feeling of an everyday cigar. Nothing excessive. A cigar that felt should lie stable in the humidor for times when you want a slightly smaller smoke with shorter smoke time.
Blend
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf USA – Binder: Brazil – Filler: Nicaragua and Honduras
Size
Drew Estate Papas Faritas were quite small in size. A size that can be good to have close at hand when you’re short on time.
Size: Lenght 4 1/2 (114mm) x ring gauge 43 (17mm)
Scent and cold draw
The wrapper of Drew Estate Papas fritas had a scent of hay and farmyard while the filler had a scent of espresso and dark chocolate. The flavors i felt from the cold draw was maltiness and oats.
Lets light up The Drew Estate Papas Fritas
It all started with a creamy yet buttery texture. The cigar wasn’t particularly complex and the flavors i felt were the same from start to finish. The fact that the complexity was low didn’t really matter. Sometimes you just want a stable cigar that doesn’t require you to put all your focus on it. The dominant flavors I was presented with where general chocolate, spiciness, hay, a nuttiness that was a combination of cashews and peanuts and a sweetness that went towards Syrup. In the background there were flavors of espresso, caffe latte, dried herbs, raisins and florality. The retrohale slightly tickled my nose and gave nuances of woodiness, pepperiness and chocolate.
Burn quality
During the inspection earlier, I felt that the cigar was uneven and felt pressed in the last third. Unfortunately, this created a bit of a problem with the cigar and when I got there I had to correct the cigar a bit so that it wouldn’t glow too crookedly.
Draw
Drew Estate Papas Fritas had a neither too loose nor too tight draw from start to finish.
After taste
The aftertaste was walnuts. The aftertaste didn’t linger long after I put the cigar down which I felt was pretty good. Sometimes that walnut flavor can linger a little too long and create a dry feeling on the palette.
Body
The body of Papas Fritas was medium, bordering on full.
Smoke time
I was a bit shocked after I put the cigar down. My expectations were it would take about 30 minutes to smoke and instead it took about 40 minutes. I was able to smoke it quite slowly without the ember being negatively affected in any way.
Conclusion
Drew Estate Papas Fritas has a body that is medium on the borderline of full. The fact that the body is almost full and quite robust makes it suitable for the experienced afisionados. The fact that it lacks complexity and is quite small makes it an excellent everyday cigar. If I compare price vs quality vs taste I feel it is where it should be even though the construction was not the best.
