There was a flavor in the cigar that I don’t remember having experienced more than once or twice before in my years. An incredibly interesting experience.
Construction
Raphael (1483–1520) was a painter of clarity and control. Best known for his Madonnas and the frescoes in the Vatican’s School of Athens.
The cigar was firmly rolled and had a thicker oily feeling to it.
Wrapper: Undisclosed – Binder: Ecuador – Filler: Dominican, Ecuador and Nicaragua
Scent and cold draw
The wrapper had a lighter scent of nuttiness while the filler had a scent of farmyard. The flavors i felt from the cold draw where oats and maltiness.
1/3 Lets light up the El Septimo Raphael robusto extra and see what it has to offer
The cigar started off light heartedly, a bit like teasing the taste buds, only to show an incredibly delightful complexity after the first third.
The texture of El Septimo Raphael was creamy and the flavors i felt where general spiciness, woodiness, nuttiness and anise.
In the background were flavors of cacao, fir needles, herbs and brown sugar. The retrohale was smooth and gave shades of hay.
2/3 The cigar showed complexity and a unique flavor profile
The cigar had the same creamy profile as earlier and offered flavors of Salty, dark roasted coffee with brown sugar sweetness, oaky woodiness, dried herbs, nuttiness with a slight hint of peanuts and walnuts, last but not least came a flavor that strangely enough a maltiness that reminded me incredibly much of the maltiness of beer. This particular flavor developed interestingly in the last third. In the background there were nuances of raisins, florality and a spiciness that reminded me of black pepper. Retrohalation was smooth and gave nuances of hay.
3/3 A ending to the cigar that was easy to enjoy
The texture stayed pretty consistent from start to finish during the cigar and was creamy as in the first and second third. The flavors El Septimo Raphael offered me where raisins, anise, dark chocolate mixed with espresso, saltiness, nuttiness in the sweet almond direction. The maltiness from earlier became more prominent and a hint of citrus came into the mix, the combination of the maltiness and citrus reminded me of a sour but sweet beer which gave an incredibly lovely touch to the cigar. In the background there were flavors of leather, spiciness in the black pepper direction, fir needles and a faint hint of minerals. Retrohalation was still smooth and gave hints of hay in combination with leather.
After taste
Walnuts
Body
Medium bordering on full
Smoke time
75 minutes
Conclusion
El Septimo Raphael is a well-balanced cigar with a malty flavor combined with citrus that stands out and makes it incredibly interesting. The body that is medium on the verge of full makes it suitable for the slightly more experienced Aficionados. If I compare price vs taste vs quality I think it is where it should be, possibly a little low in price considering that it beats many other cigars in the same price class.
