When I started emailing Cristina, I didn’t know what I would learn. Their story shows that no matter what profession you belong to, you can succeed in following your passion. In addition to their story, I wanted to know what it’s like to be a woman in a still male-dominated profession and what setbacks you face that a man usually doesn’t.
How did your interest in cigars begin?
“Our interest in cigars stemmed from family influences and serendipitous encounters. My husband’s father was an avid cigar smoker, immersing him in this world from a young age. Additionally, over time, we had the opportunity to meet individuals involved in the cigar trade, which further deepened our interest and passion for this art of living”
What did you and your husband do before cigars?
“Before founding Lecigare.ch, our professional backgrounds were quite different from the cigar industry. My husband worked in the banking sector, while I was involved in communication and marketing. These respective experiences provided us with complementary skills, invaluable for managing and developing our business”
What is the story behind the shop, how did it all start?

“We founded Lecigare.ch in 2007 with the desire to share our passion for cigars with other enthusiasts in Switzerland. At that time, we noticed a lack of access to a diverse selection of quality cigars and high-end accessories. Thus, we decided to create an online platform offering a carefully curated range of Cuban and non-Cuban cigars, as well as accessories, while ensuring personalized service and prompt delivery. Over the years, we have also developed our own cigar lines, such as “The Telegram,” “Blue Line,” “Flamingo,” and “Gecko,” to offer our clientele unique products that reflect our expertise and passion”

Following dreams is a central part of everything I do, what is your best advice for those who want to follow their dreams?
“We firmly believe that pursuing one’s dreams requires a combination of passion, perseverance, and preparation. It’s essential to thoroughly understand the field you wish to enter, establish a solid plan, and remain resilient in the face of challenges. Surround yourself with people who share your values and can support you on your journey. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and continually learn”
The cigar community is more welcoming than many other communities. Why do you think it’s a more open community?
“Cigar culture is inherently social, promoting sharing and conviviality. Cigar enthusiasts often enjoy gathering to exchange experiences, discuss various flavors and origins, and share moments of relaxation. This atmosphere creates an environment where people feel comfortable engaging in conversations and forming connections, regardless of their background or social status”
This question is directly for you, Cristina: the cigar community has long been male-dominated and is changing as I see it. Do you feel that there are any challenges you encounter that, for example, your husband or other men do not encounter?
“As a woman in the cigar industry, it’s undeniable that specific challenges arise. At times, demonstrating in-depth expertise is necessary to be recognized appropriately. However, this dynamic is evolving positively. More and more women are asserting themselves in the cigar world, whether as consumers, professionals, or opinion leaders. This diversification enriches the community and promotes increased open-mindedness. Personally, I’ve chosen to view these challenges as opportunities to strengthen my passion, deepen my knowledge, and actively contribute to shaping a more inclusive industry that reflects its growing diversity”
