Kristoff Sumatra robusto cigar review

Construction

I was a little worried when I felt the cigar. It was firm and evenly rolled with a slightly oily feel to it. However, there was a larger, firmer vein that almost felt like a twig along the entire length of the cigar. The “twig” got me a little worried it would cause some problems with the ember.

Blend

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra – Binder: Brazil – Filler: Cuban Seed Dominican, Cuban Seed Nicaraguan

Size

The cigar we choose to review was a Robusto.

Size: 5.5 x 54 ( Lenght 140mm – diameter 21mm)

Scent and cold draw

The wrapper had a scent of hay and dark chocolate while the filler had a scent of coffee beans and chocolate. The cold draw was relaxing and pleasant. A cold draft you could enjoy at work as an appetizer before lighting your cigar in the evening.
The flavors i felt from the cigar were milkiness, chocolate and hay.

1/3 Lets light up the Kristoff Sumatra robusto

After I lit the Kristoff Sumatra robusto I was greeted by a creamy texture with a slight hint of oiliness. It didn’t take long for the cigar to show that it was on the medium borderline of full body.

The flavors I felt from the cigar were General pepperiness with a hint of black pepper, classic tobacco, wood towards spruce, ground coffee beans and a combination of hay and grass. In the background there were nuances of saltiness, raisins, cacao, leather and a sweetness that is best described as a combination of syrup and honey. Retrohaling tickled my nose a little and the nuances i felt were black pepper.

2/3 Lets enjoy the cigars complexity

As I entered the second third, the oiliness that I felt earlier disappeared and the texture was just creamy but became richer. The flavors Kristoff Sumatra presented were Hay, leather, classic tobacco, ground coffee beans, dark chocolate combined with cacao and saltiness. The saltiness that was previously in the background took a good leap forward and gave all the flavors a balance. In the background there were lighter shades of sweet licorice, dried herbs, biscuits, raisins, florality and general sweetness. Retrohalation became smooth and the nuance I felt was Dark woodiness.

3/3 Lets see how the Kristoff Sumatra robusto ends

As I entered the final third the cigar showed a new texture, a texture that was creamy but left a dry feeling on the palette. The flavors the cigar offered were Leather, Earthiness, Woodiness, General Herbs with a hint of Anise and Hay. In the background were flavors of Pepperiness, Raisin, Milkiness, a combination of Dark Chocolate and Light Chocolate. In the background I could feel flavors of Floweriness in the tulip vein, Coffee Beans and a syrupy sweetness. Retrohaling tickled to a little light in my nose and gave General Woodiness nuances with a lighter hint of Cedar.

Burn quality

I think the vein I had felt during the inspection was what created the problem. Unfortunately, I had to correct the glow of Kristoff Sumatra quite a bit from start to finish. It was an annoyance considering the cigar had so much to offer otherwise.

Draw

The draw of the cigar was as you would expect. The Kristoff Sumatra was neither thick nor airy. A draw you would expect from a cigar.

After taste

Walenut

Body

Medium bordering on full

Smoke time

The smoking time was quite impressive. Instead of the classic 60 minutes you usually get with a Robusto, it delivered a time of 75 minutes. In other words, it was possible to smoke slowly and coolly.

Conclusion

Kristoff Sumatra Robusto is a well-balanced cigar with lighter complexity that makes it interesting from start to finish. The flavors are a little more earthy with lighter sweetness. The body that is medium on the border of full makes it suitable for the slightly more experienced Aficionados. If it weren’t for the fact that it needed a lot of correction from start to finish, I would have felt the price was right, but considering the amount of correction, I think it was high in price.

Who would i recommend the cigar to?

  • If you like medium to full bodied cigars.
  • If you are looking for a cigar with semi big complexity
  • Enjoy earty flavor profiles
