Cigar Lounges & Shops in Boston

Updated August 2026 · 30 lounges and tobacconists · Compiled by Peter Stefanic, Certified Cigar Sommelier (IACS)

Boston has fewer places to smoke a cigar than any major American city, and the law is entirely responsible. Massachusetts banned indoor smoking in 2004 and permitted only a small number of “smoking bars” that had registered before the deadline. That list cannot grow. No new cigar bar has opened in Boston in over two decades, and when one of the grandfathered rooms closes, it is gone for good.

This page therefore covers the whole state, because if the room you want is full there may not be another for twenty miles. What survives is worth seeking out: a basement cigar bar in the North End that has been there since long before the ban, a Park Plaza tobacconist trading since the 1870s, and a Harvard Square shop that has looked the same for a century.

Every venue here is a cigar business first — a lounge, a cigar bar or a tobacconist with a real humidor. General smoke and vape shops are left out.

FAQ

Can you smoke cigars indoors in Boston?

Only in a handful of venues. Massachusetts banned indoor smoking in workplaces in 2004 and created a narrow exemption for “smoking bars” — establishments that generate most of their revenue from tobacco and that registered with the state before the deadline. That register is closed. No new cigar bar can open in Massachusetts, which is why Boston has a fraction of the rooms found in cities of comparable size.

Why do some Boston cigar shops not allow smoking at all?

Because the smoking bar permit and a retail tobacco licence are different things. A shop can sell you excellent cigars without holding the permit that would let you light one on the premises. Several of the best tobacconists in the city are retail only. If sitting and smoking matters to you, check before you travel.

Do Boston cigar lounges serve alcohol?

The grandfathered smoking bars do, with full licences. The shop lounges generally do not, and at least one explicitly prohibits alcohol on the premises while inviting you to bring coffee. Because the permits are so restricted, the arrangement varies more here than in most cities.

How much should you tip at a cigar bar in Boston?

At the licensed cigar bars, where there is full table and bar service, tip as you would at any Boston bar: fifteen to twenty per cent. At a shop counter, a few dollars if someone has walked you through the humidor and cut for you.

Do you have to be 21 to enter a cigar lounge in Massachusetts?

Yes. Massachusetts set the tobacco purchase age at 21 and venues card at the door. At least one shop declines digital identification, so bring a physical card.

Before you go: opening hours, prices and policies change, and businesses close without notice. Check the venue’s own website or call ahead before travelling. Listings here are compiled from public business records and are provided for guidance only.
