North Carolina built its wealth on tobacco. Winston-Salem and Durham were company towns, the state still grows more leaf than any other, and yet Charlotte itself was late to the cigar lounge. Most of the rooms here have opened in the past fifteen years, and it shows: they are newer, cleaner and more bar-led than the old-money shops you find in northern cities.

The other thing that shapes this city is the state line. Fort Mill, Rock Hill and Indian Land are twenty minutes from uptown but sit in South Carolina, and several of the best rooms in the metro are on that side. This page covers both.

Every venue here is a cigar business first — a lounge, a cigar bar or a tobacconist with a real humidor. General smoke and vape shops are left out.

Can you smoke cigars indoors in Charlotte?

Yes, in the right venues. North Carolina banned smoking in restaurants and bars in 2010 but exempted cigar bars and tobacco shops, so a room whose main business is cigars can still allow smoking indoors. An ordinary bar cannot. South Carolina, twenty minutes south, applies its own rules and is generally more permissive, which is one reason several of the metro’s best rooms are on that side of the line.

Why do so many Charlotte lounges charge a day pass?

Because the membership model is unusually common here. Rooms across the metro run annual or monthly memberships that include a locker, discounts and priority seating, and offer a day pass — often five to ten dollars — for everyone else. It is rarely a barrier: the pass is cheap, and most rooms are happy to explain the options at the door. Ask before you sit down rather than at the end.

What is a cutting fee, and should you expect to pay one in Charlotte?

A cutting fee is what a lounge charges to smoke a cigar you did not buy there. Around Charlotte it runs about five dollars per cigar, considerably less than in most large US cities. Some rooms fold it into the day pass instead. Either way, it is worth asking on arrival.

How much should you tip at a cigar lounge in Charlotte?

Where there is bar service, tip as you would anywhere: fifteen to twenty per cent. At a shop counter, a few dollars if someone has walked you through the humidor and cut for you. In a members’ room where you have taken a chair for the evening, buying something from the humidor is what keeps you welcome.

Do you have to be 21 to enter a cigar lounge in North Carolina?

Yes. Both North and South Carolina set the tobacco purchase age at 21, and venues card at the door. Bring identification.
