Updated August 2026 · 52 lounges and tobacconists · Compiled by Peter Stefanic, Certified Cigar Sommelier (IACS)
Chicago has fewer cigar rooms inside the city than its size would suggest, and the reason is legal. Illinois passed one of the strictest indoor smoking bans in the country, and the exemption for tobacco shops was written narrowly enough that no new cigar bar can simply open. What survived is a small, unusual set of venues: century-old tobacconists on the second floor, converted mansions with day passes, and members’ clubs where you bring your own bottle because they cannot sell you one.
That makes Chicago a better cigar city than the numbers suggest. This page covers the city and the whole collar of suburbs, from Waukegan down to Frankfort and west to Elgin and Aurora. Every entry is marked Lounge, Shop, or both.
Featured listing — this space is available. A featured listing puts your lounge at the top of this page, above every other lounge in Chicago, and includes a photograph, a full description instead of a single line, a direct link to your website and Instagram, and placement above all standard listings. FAQ
Only in a narrow set of venues. The Smoke Free Illinois Act bans indoor smoking almost everywhere, and its exemption covers retail tobacco stores that were operating before 2008 and earn most of their revenue from tobacco. New cigar bars cannot simply open here the way they can in Texas or Florida. Every venue on this page operates within that exemption, which is why the city has far fewer rooms than its size would suggest.
Because the tobacco-shop exemption and a liquor licence are difficult to hold at the same time. The result is that most Chicago cigar rooms are bring-your-own: they will give you glasses and ice, sometimes coffee or soft drinks, but you bring the bottle. A handful of venues operating as bars rather than shops do serve, and those are the exception rather than the rule.
Because they cannot make money on drinks, several Chicago rooms charge for the seat instead — typically twenty to fifty dollars for the day, sometimes waived or credited against a cigar purchase. Members pay an annual fee for a private floor, a locker and priority seating. If you are visiting the city for a few days, the day pass is usually the better value; ask what it includes before paying.
It is the charge for smoking a cigar you did not buy on the premises. Chicago rooms tend to set it higher than the national average, or replace it with a minimum purchase — two cigars, or a set dollar amount per person. This is not a scam; it is how a venue that cannot sell you a drink covers the cost of your chair.
Where staff bring you glasses, clean your ashtray and guide you through the humidor, a few dollars per visit is normal, more if you have taken up a table for the afternoon. Where there is table service and a bar, tip as you would anywhere else. Regulars who tip well get the better chairs, which matters more in a city where seating is limited.
Yes. Illinois set the tobacco purchase age at 21, and because the venues on this page operate as tobacco retailers they card at the door. Bring identification.
Downtown, in the Loop and River North, where the oldest shops are. A scattering across the north and west sides of the city itself. And two substantial suburban clusters: the western corridor through Villa Park, Lisle, Westmont and Countryside out to Aurora, and the Southland through Flossmoor, Matteson, Tinley Park and Frankfort. Premises are larger and cheaper outside the city, and several of the best-regarded rooms in Illinois are in those two rings rather than downtown.
Before you go: opening hours, prices and policies change, and businesses close without notice. Check the venue’s own website or call ahead before travelling. Listings here are compiled from public business records and are provided for guidance only.
