Denver has fewer cigar rooms than a city of its size should, and the reason is legal. Colorado’s Clean Indoor Air Act permits smoking only in cigar bars that were already operating in 2005 and in retail tobacco businesses that meet a narrow revenue test. No new cigar bar has opened here in twenty years. What survives is a small, well-run set of venues: a century-old hotel bar downtown, a handful of serious tobacconists, and a scattering of suburban lounges from Wheat Ridge out to Castle Rock and Longmont.

Colorado also taxes tobacco heavily, which local shop owners mention often and customers notice at the till. Buying a box here costs meaningfully more than in Texas or Florida.

Every venue here is a cigar business first — a lounge, a cigar bar or a tobacconist with a real humidor. General smoke and vape shops are left out.

Can you smoke cigars indoors in Denver?

Only in a narrow set of venues. Colorado’s Clean Indoor Air Act allows smoking in cigar bars that were already operating in 2005 and in retail tobacco businesses that derive most of their revenue from tobacco. No new cigar bar has been able to open in Colorado in two decades. That is why the city has far fewer rooms than its size suggests, and why most of what exists is a shop with a lounge behind the counter rather than a bar.

Why are cigars expensive in Colorado?

The state applies a substantial tobacco tax on top of the federal one, and it has risen in recent years. Shop owners here mention it unprompted, and the difference on a box compared with Texas or Florida is significant. Some suburban municipalities apply lower local rates than Denver itself, which is why a few shops just outside the city line make a point of it.

Do Denver cigar lounges serve alcohol?

A handful of the grandfathered bars do, with full liquor licences and kitchens. The rest are shops, and the standard arrangement there is that you buy a cigar and sit — coffee or soft drinks may be offered, but alcohol usually is not. Where a lounge is attached to a bar, outside drinks are not permitted.

Is there a membership or day fee at Denver lounges?

At some of the larger suburban rooms, yes: a public lounge at the front is open to anyone who buys a cigar, with a members’ room behind it. Fees are generally modest and most venues will explain the options at the counter. Several of the shops charge nothing at all beyond the cigar.

How much should you tip at a Denver cigar lounge?

Where there is bar service, tip as you would anywhere: fifteen to twenty per cent. At a shop counter, a few dollars if someone has walked you through the humidor. Note that several Denver-area shops now present a tipping screen at the register for straightforward retail purchases, which some regulars find awkward — there is no obligation on a simple over-the-counter sale.

Do you have to be 21 to enter a cigar lounge in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado set the tobacco purchase age at 21 and venues card at the door. Bring identification.
