Cigar aficionados know that size shapes the entire smoking experience. From the moment you light up the cigar to the final draw, dimensions tell about burn time, flavor development, and intensity. Heres our detailed guide to the most common cigar size you’ll encounter, with measurements in inches, millimeters, and ring gauge.
Every cigar has two key dimensions: length and ring gauge. The length is measured from the foot to the cap, while the ring gauge refers to the diameter, measured in 64ths of an inch. Converting these to millimeters is simple: 1 inch equals 25.4 mm. Understanding these numbers allows you to choose a cigar that fits your preferences perfectly.
Sometimes it can be a little confusing with ring gauge considering that it is calculated in 64 parts of an inch, we want to make it easier for you by taking some of the most common vitolas and turn them to mm with inches on the side in our chart below.

If you want to calculate the ring gauge size in mm for a cigar, do the following:
Take 25.4 mm (1 inch) divided by 64 times the ring gauge.
The size of a cigar affects how it burns, the strength of the smoke, and the development of flavor. Wider cigars (larger ring gauges) provide more filler tobacco, creating richer, more complex flavors. Slimmer cigars concentrate the smoke, producing sharper, more intense notes. Longer cigars give flavors time to evolve, offering a more complex experience.
