When we talk about how long it takes to smoke a cigar, we usually mention the time as standard on the vitola (size). It is a good measure to follow, but it is far from always correct. Getting an exact time depends a lot on how fast you smoke, how you store the cigars, what kind of climate you smoke them in and the blend itself. I have smoked robusto cigars about 75 minutes even thou Robusto has a standard smoke time 45-60 minutes and once a Toro for 120 minutes insted of 65 minutes.
Let’s go over the standard on how long it takes to smoke a cigar for some popular sizes and then go a little deeper into what can make the time to smoke a cigar longer or shorter.
Standard for the vitola (size)
| Vitola (size) | Time |
| Robusto | 45-60 minutes |
| Corona | 40-45 minutes |
| Churchill | 60-70 minutes |
| Toro | 55-65 minutes |
| Torpedo | 55 minutes |
Besides the sizes, there are several classes within the sizes. Take for example, Robusto, short robusto, corona, double corona, petit corona and so on.
There are several things that affects the time it takes to smoke a cigar in addition to the vitola
The cigar’s tobacco blend
The blend has a large part of the smoking time. A cigar plant is divided into three parts. Ligero which is the part that is at the top of the plant. It is mostly used as a wrapper and burns more slowly.
Seco is the middle part of the plant. It is most often used as a binder and burns a little faster than Ligero.
Volado is the bottom part. It is most often used as a filler and burns the fastest of the three parts of the tobacco plant. In addition to country, type of seed, fermentation and storage to bring out the perfect taste, the different parts of the plant have a great importance. If the blend contains a large amount of Ligero or seco in the filler to get a special flavor character, the cigar burns more slowly. It can be assumed that a cigar that burns quickly has most of the volado while a cigar that burns more slowly has ligero or seco mixed into the filler.
How the cigar is stored humidety
How the cigars are stored is of great importance. Today, you can read everything on the web that the humidity should be from 65%-70% humidity in the humidor. Everyone has their preferences and thoughts. A cigar with a humidity of around 65% will glow faster than one at 70-72%. We can compare it with firewood, the dry firewood will burn faster while the moist will take a little longer time to burn. The humidity also has a small effect on how quickly you should take a puff. If the cigar is too moist, you will have to take puffs more often than if the cigar were a little drier. If it is too dry, it will burn too quickly and the moment with the cigar will be shortened considering that the glow shortens the cigar faster with each puff.
Where you smoke your cigar
Where you smoke your cigar can make a big difference. Is it an indoor environment or outdoors? Is it sun and heat, rain or snow? If you smoke your cigar indoors, it usually does not affect the original smoking time of the cigar. There is no wind and no rain, no moisture, snow and cold that affect the cigar. If you stand outside in the heat and the wind is minimal, it usually does not affect the cigar. If, on the other hand, you are standing outside in the rain and the climate is really humid, be prepared that you need to smoke the cigar faster than usual so that it does not go out and rotate it more often so that the wind does not cause it to glow crookedly. The smoking time will most likely be shorter than usual. If there is snow even then, you must be prepared to smoke a little faster than usual, even faster than if it were raining. The cold causes the glow to go out faster in combination with the moisture the snow brings with it. When you smoke cigars in this climate, you have to be prepared that it will not taste the same as is usually do. The risk of the cigar becoming bitter is greater given that you smoke the cigar faster.
How you smoke your cigar
How quickly you take a puff determines how quickly you smoke a cigar. You can smoke a cigar that actually takes 45 minutes in 30 minutes if you smoke fast and in 1 hour or more if you smoke slowly. Everything depends on you. It all comes down to personal preference. The only thing that is important to keep in mind is that if you smoke too quickly, the cigar may start to taste bitter and if you smoke too slowly, it will go out. Try to find a pace that is relaxing for you and doesn’t cause the cigar to go out or become bitter. There are written guidelines that say about one puff every 45 seconds or every minute. These are good guidelines to follow. Keep in mind that the environment can determine how fast you chould smoke your cigar, as I wrote earlier in the post.
