Back to where my cigar journey began! Memories

It’s almost comical how a combination of places, cigars and people can bring back memories. This day reminded me of when my cigar journey began and many other memories. The other day I visited my brother-in-law who was going to help me with my car. The cold of the winter had almost completely drained the battery and I had no opportunity to take her on a long trip to charge it. There was enough power left to start the car but the battery needed charging. Luckily I didn’t have a charger at home and went there. The battery was put on charge and we sat down in his and my sister’s basement. As a routine, I always carry my travel humidor with 5-7 cigars of mixed character, you never know when you’ll want to enjoy a cigar. My choice of cigar was the Leonel terra rouge robusto. A cigar with a medium body bordering on full with a lot of flavor. After I had lit the cigar and smoked for a few minutes, I was filled with memories and almost nostalgia. I realized that it had been more than 14 years since I sat in that basement smoking a cigar. The memories began to flood in, even though I had smoked several cigars at their house in recent years, that particular place was special to me. That’s where my passion for cigars began. As I sat there, memories from that time of my life came flooding back. Our family are all close, we used to meet at my sister and her husband’s place almost every weekend on either Saturday or Sunday to have dinner and hang out. It was me, my sister, her husband and sometimes their friends who became friends of the family, After the dinners we went down to the basement, me, my brother-in-law and if they had a friend over to light a cigar. (You can read about the cigar that got me to where I am today here: Who I am – Vdg-cigars) The little tradition lasted a few years. Memories of those moments and all the memories with the family flowed and I became sentimental. I, who was young at the time, didn’t realize it, but when I look back, I have a different perspective. At the time, my brother-in-law was more like a big brother than a brother-in-law. He took me under his wing and was always there like a close relative. Although today I see him as a brother-in-law and friend, there will always be a part of me that will look up to him for those years. We went on fly fishing trips, worked together and hung out quite a bit on the weekends. I could write a book about all the memories that flooded in that day.

You should never underestimate what a cigar, people and places can bring to you. Sometimes that cigar is more than a moment of pleasure, it can be a moment of sentimental memories and moments of joy and laughter. The next time you smoke a cigar, take in your surroundings and enjoy what’s around you.
