Lighting a cigar isn’t just about taste, it’s about the time you invest in your self. The size you choose defines the pace, the flavour development, and the kind of moment you create. Some formats offer quick moments of pleasure while others unfold like an evening ritual.
Choosing the right cigar size can completely change your smoking experience. From the Corona to the bold Robusto, the balanced Toro, and the grand Churchill, each vitola brings a unique flavour journey to your invested time. The length, and ring gauge of your cigar determine not only how long you will enjoy the cigar, but also how the blend’s character unfolds.
If you’ve ever wondered which cigar size suits your taste and time, this our guid will help you understand the differences between Robusto, Toro, Churchill, and Corona cigars, including their exact dimensions, smoking times, and personality.
Let’s take a look four of the most popular cigar vitolas, the Corona, Robusto, Toro, and Churchill and discover which one fits you the best.
Corona
Size: Length between 5.1/2 and 6 inches (139–152 mm) – Ring Gauge: 42–44 (16,5 – 17,5mm) Smoke Time aprox: 40–60 minutes
The Corona is where tradition and simplicity meet. Slim, balanced, and beautifully proportioned, it’s the format that defined cigar culture for generations. Its body allows the wrapper’s flavour to take the lead.
Robusto
Size: Length between 4.75 and 5.5 inches (121–133 mm) – Ring Gauge: 48–52 (19-21mm) – Smoke Time aprox: 45–65 minutes
The Robusto is a bit thicker than Corona and allows the master blender to use more tobacco in the blend. The thicker format allows the cigar to offer more complexity and a slightly longer smoke time.
Toro
Size: Lenght between 6 and 6.5 inches (152–165 mm) – Ring Gauge: 52–54 (20,5 – 21,5mm) – Smoke Time aprox: 60–80 minutes
Although the ring gauge allows the blend to be more complex, the length also starts to play a more important role in the complexity. More smoke moves through the cigar and heats the oils slowly. More flavors emerge in the cigar and shift shades. Compare it to grilling where you add some form of wood so that the woody smoke will give your piece of meat a form of flavor. The more smoke and the longer the time, the more flavor you get on your peace of meat.
Churchill
Size: Lenght aprox 7 inch (178mm) – Ring Gauge: 47–50 (18,5 – 20mm) – Smoke Time aprox: 80–100 minutes
Churchill has a slightly narrower ring gauge than Toro but is longer. This allows for less tobacco in the blend but more room for the complexity to come through the length of the cigar. You get more flavor from each leaf than the variety of leaves. This, like in Toro, allows more smoke to slowly pass through the cigar and leave an imprint on the tobacco behind, also more thanks to the length of the cigar.
Choosing between Robusto vs Toro vs Churchill vs Corona isn’t just about size, it’s about pick the cigar that fits your time, your mood and how complex you want the cigar to be.
